Hawkins Field Airport: A Legacy in Flight

Aviation in Jackson began in 1928 when the city purchased 151 acres of farmland—known as the Davis Stock Farm—for $53,500. This land was developed into Davis Field, Jackson’s first airport, dedicated on November 9, 1928. On June 17, 1929, Delta Air Lines made its first commercial flight into Jackson from Dallas, Texas, landing at Davis Field with five passengers and one pilot aboard. In 1936, significant enhancements were made to the airport terminal and apron through investments by the Works Progress Administration and the Civilian Conservation Corps.

In 1941, the airfield was renamed Hawkins Field in honor of A.F. Hawkins, a city commissioner with a strong passion for aviation. That same year, Hawkins Field played a pivotal role in World War II as the “Jackson Air Base,” initially used by the Royal Netherlands Military Flying School to train Dutch military aviators in exile. With the introduction of jet service in 1963, Jackson expanded its aviation reach with the development of what is now Jackson–Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport.

Today, Hawkins Field proudly operates as a general aviation airport and is home to the Mississippi Army National Guard 185th Aviation Brigade. Hawkins Field also plays a vital role in health and safety, offering direct access to Jackson’s hospitals and trauma units. Tenants like PHI Air Medical and Pafford EMS provide lifesaving air ambulance services, transporting patients, doctors, transplant materials, and medicines swiftly when every second counts. In addition to its critical medical role, Hawkins Field is a key asset for business and civic life in Jackson. Corporate visitors frequently use the airport for its quick access to the city’s business and government centers, universities, and medical facilities, making it a convenient and efficient gateway for commerce and service.

On June 17, 2021, JMAA celebrated the original terminal at Hawkins Field becoming an official historic landmark, coinciding with the 92nd anniversary of Delta Air Lines’ first flight into Jackson. This designation honors the airport’s deep roots and lasting contributions to aviation history. For nearly 100 years, Hawkins Field has been a cornerstone of Jackson’s aviation heritage, continuing to serve its community with pride and purpose.
